Message from the Vice-Provost

With the fall term on the horizon, I'm pleased to share the launch of new resources and programming that will help to support the excellent work happening across classrooms and curricula. This month, I'd like to highlight the new AI Task Force Updates SharePoint and announce dates for the 2024-25 Forum on Experiential Learning. And just a reminder, in preparation for the fall we have updated the FAQ and associated suggested syllabus language related to AI on our website. I’d also like to thank our summer students, whose hard work contributed to our projects on experiential learning, undergraduate research, and data analytics.

New Guidelines for Payments to Indigenous Payees

The University of Toronto has released new guidelines to improve payment processes for Indigenous partners. These guidelines provide a resource for staff, faculty, librarians and student groups, with the goal of reducing barriers in payment processes for non-employee Indigenous partners who work with the University.

If working on a project that involves Indigenous community members, please consult these guidelines. For any questions on incorporating these guidelines into an institutional teaching grant, please reach out to vp.iue@utoronto.ca as we're happy to connect you with the appropriate institutional or divisional office for consultation.

Teaching & Learning

Discovery Series: Conversations with Students about AI

Monday, September 23 from 1:00-2:30 p.m.
via Governing Council Chamber (in-person) and Microsoft Teams (online)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at the forefront of many discussions in academic units. In our first session of the 2024-25 Discovery Series, we will explore two innovative projects that involve nuanced conversations with students about AI.One team is training future builders of systems to assess the ethical implications of the technologies they are creating. Their approach is to embed modules on ethics and technology into select courses across the computer science curriculum, including three AI courses. The other team is working to train chemistry students on the potential uses and limitations of generative AI in the context of developing formal writing skills. As part of this conversation, considerations are given to academic integrity concerns, ethical usage and the potential for biases and hallucinations with AI. Learn more on our website.
