As we near the end of the winter term, I would like to congratulate all of the U of T faculty, staff and student recipients on their recent awards of recognition. I also encourage you to engage in the many conversations happening across the University about teaching and learning in the coming months, including the annual Teaching & Learning Symposium! Congratulations to the 2024-25 Northrop Frye Award Recipients!

The Northrop Frye Awards recognize teams of staff, faculty and librarians who have undertaken teaching and learning projects to enhance the student learning experience. Congratulations to Professor Snejina Sonina, Matthew Lefaive, and Beryl Tang from the Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough on receiving this year's award for their development of an eLearning platform designed to enhance learning in introductory language courses.

Congratulations to the 2024 CEWIL Student of the Year Award Recipient!

Phoenix Seelochan, a fourth-year student at the University of Toronto Mississauga has won the 2024 CEWIL Canada Emery-Dufault Student of the Year Award. A national award that recognizes up to four post-secondary students for their exceptional performance and accomplishments in work-integrated learning.

CEWIL Canada Research Grants: Strengthening Co-op and Work Integrated Learning (WIL) in Canada

Applications are due Friday, April 18 at 4:00 p.m.

CEWIL Canada is offering two grants, with a value of up to CAD $10,000 each, to promote research that strengthens the development of co-operative education and work-integrated learning across Canada. Research must address the Canadian context and provide valuable insights into co-op and WIL engagement, enrichment and impact.

Call for Applications: Graduate Education Innovation Fund (GEIF) Winter Application

Applications are due Wednesday, April 2

GEIF aims to support projects that create positive, innovative changes in the design and delivery of graduate education. U of T faculty members with continuing appointments are eligible to apply. Five seed grants to a maximum of $5,000 each will be available. This initiative is coordinated by Professor Vina Goghari, Vice-Dean, Research and Program Innovation. The Centre for Community Partnerships invites you to attend the 2025 Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Faculty Institute, What’s Next for Community-Engaged Learning? Charting the Course for Transformative Change.

This annual event brings together CEL instructors from across the University of Toronto to share and learn from each other about effective strategies for CEL teaching, informed by the latest research and on-the-ground experience. The two-part event will take place over two days, the first featuring a virtual plenary panel and the second, an in-person day at the University of Toronto St. George Campus. This year’s Institute will offer an opportunity to reflect on 20 years of CEL at U of T, and to further our collective critical thinking about the future of CEL.

Monday, May 12 (online) and Tuesday, May 13 (in-person)

This year's theme for the TLS2025 is Teaching and Learning for Human Flourishing. Professor Jessica Riddell, Bishop's University, will deliver the TLS2025 keynote and offer an in-person workshop based on her book Hope Circuits: Rewiring Universities and Other Organizations for Human Flourishing. Registration for TLS2025 opens on April 14th.

Katrina Persad, Project Specialist & Analyst, Experiential Learning submitted two successful session proposals for this year’s CACUSS conference in Halifax this spring: Saying the Thing: Navigating Challenging Conversations as a New(ish) Middle Manager; and together with Nilton Gaspar, Systems & Product Lead, Experiential Learning, The Change Gauntlet: An Experiential Journey Through Chaos and Opportunity.

Introducing Nina Mondré Schweppe, Teaching Initiatives Coordinator, OVPIUE

Nina joined the team at the end of February, where she supports teaching initiatives in the OVPIUE as well as manages communications for the team. Nina recently moved back to Toronto from Montana, where she focused on communications and instructional design at Montana State University. While at MSU, Nina taught undergraduate courses and led a series of professional development workshops for faculty with a primary concentration on Universal Design for Learning. Nina has also worked on several projects with U of T’s Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. Welcome Nina!
