Canada Constructed: Architecture, Landscape, History

Learning & Education Advancement Fund Impact (LEAF)

The purpose of the initiative was to transform teaching and learning about the Canadian built environment through a cluster of new courses at various curricular levels in the Department of Art History that highlight experiential learning as part of their pedagogical method, including organization-partnered projects and internship placements for students with community partners.

Outcomes

The project exceeded expectations and transformed teaching and learning in ways the Department of Art History had not imagined at the outset. What began as an initiative to integrate experiential learning into courses and internships grew into a model for innovation across the University of Toronto and beyond. The courses developed from the LEAF funding were opened to students from Arts and Science, the Daniels Faculty, and other divisions. These courses in the history and evolution of buildings and landscapes were designed to complement courses in other departments (such as Geography, History, and Indigenous Studies).

Assisting with this was the secondary deliverable of the website and online hub for the initiative, containing teaching resources, co-curricular opportunities, community partner listings, and student research results. Additionally, through specialized events (both online and in-person), we were able to build a community of university teachers, students, and professionals interested in the topic.
