During the 2020-21 academic year, OVPIUE convened tri-campus groups of faculty, staff and senior administrators to discuss and develop a strategy paper about the future of learning analytics at UofT. Learning analytics are “the measurement, collection, and analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs”.
While numerous institutions across Canada have begun work in this area, and some existing work has already started at UofT, our goal was to develop a strategic framework to guide learning analytics at the university. Our review of existing work highlighted many interesting applications that can be broadly grouped into four areas or sets of goals:
- Improving student learning experiences and outcomes
- Enabling instructors and staff to access and leverage learning data in support of teaching and learning activities
- Empowering students to plan and manage their learning paths
- Optimizing structure and support of digital learning environment
The complete Strategy Paper, which includes an environmental review, a look at enablers of learning analytics at the University, consideration of the opportunities for learning analytics, and the final section includes a set of recommendations for a learning analytics program at UofT. The OVPIUE will continue to provide updates on emerging initiatives and opportunities for participation, engagement and feedback.
