Implementation

Explore the key milestones and processes associated with implementation.

After making observations about the program from the analysis phase, decisions need to be made about what changes to the curriculum will be helpful. There may be program structure or requirement changes, pedagogical changes or administrative changes — likely some combination of each. These changes could involve an academic change proposal that will be approved by the appropriate governance body.

Supports the VPIUE Office can provide:

  • Consultation with the unit/program leader to help develop a rollout plan and process;
  • Coordination with the Vice-Provost, Academic Programs (VPAP) Office to support governance of academic change (for example, support the development of a major modification proposal). See the Academic Change section of the VPAP website for details on minor and major modifications, the key characteristics between them and who you can contact with questions.

The implementation milestone is focused on organizing the various changes into a coherent rollout plan including timelines, resource requirements, professional development, etc., and putting those changes into action.

Supports the VPIUE Office can provide:

  • Consultation with the unit/program leader to help develop professional development plan for faculty (for example, on new kinds of pedagogical strategies, course design, etc.)
  • Connect the unit/program leader to other institutional offices and supports relevant to rollout (for example, the Centre for Community Partnerships, Office of Online Learning Strategies, etc.)
  • Connect the unit/program leader to relevant grants and funding to support facets of rollout (for example, the Learning Education Advancement Fund)

Implementing changes to a program is done to help improve some aspect of how the program works and ultimately improve student learning. In order to ensure the changes have had the intended impact, it’s important to assess them. Assessment might include monitoring students’ grades in key courses, surveying students at the end of each year of study, monitoring retention rates, etc.

Supports the VPIUE Office can provide:

  • Consultation with the unit/program leader to help develop an overall program assessment strategy
  • Consultation with the unit/program leader to support the integration of assessment activities with UTQAP activities such as a cyclical review
  • Connect the unit/program leader to other institutional offices and supports relevant to assessment (for example, the Centre for Teaching Support and Innovation for guidance on interpretation of course evaluation data)
