Description
These awards are named for Dr. W. T. Aikins, the first Dean of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine after it was reorganized in 1887. As the Faculty’s most prestigious awards for sustained commitment to and excellence in undergraduate medical teaching, these awards are given serious consideration in the academic promotions process. Award recipients are selected from nominees in a faculty-wide process that requires support from both faculty and students.
Recognizes teaching in the Foundations part of the MD program (lectures, laboratories, seminars, workshops, tutorials, portfolio, or, in clinical skills).
Eligibility
- Nominees must have held a faculty appointment with the Temerty Faculty of Medicine for a minimum of 10 years.
- The award considers teaching performance in the undergraduate medical (MD) program only. Teaching performance in Arts & Science, graduate, and post-graduate medical programs will not be considered.
- A previous winner may be nominated for an Aikins Award in the same category as the previous award only after a lapse of five years. A previous winner may be nominated for an Aikins Award in a different category from a previous award at any time.
