There is much to celebrate this month as we near the end of the winter term. I would like to congratulate all of the U of T faculty, staff and student recipients on their recent awards of recognition. I also encourage you to view the updates related to generative AI. I wish you all a happy spring!

Awards

Congratulations to the 2023-24 Northrop Frye Award Recipients!

The Northrop Frye Awards recognize staff, faculty and librarians who have undertaken teaching and learning projects to enhance the student learning experience. Congratulations to Professor Sean Hum from the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering for being this year's faculty recipient and to the Academic Advising Training Program (AATP) and the Embedded Ethics Education Initiative (E3I) teams for being this year's team recipients.

Congratulations to the 2023 CEWIL and EWO Student of the Year Award Recipients!

The Co-operative Education and Work Integrated Learning (CEWIL) Canada Student of the Year Award recognizes four students across the country for their outstanding achievements in co-op and work-integrated learning. Congratulations to Ahnaf Rahman at the University of Toronto Scarborough for receiving the University Co-Op Award!

The Experiential and Work-Integrated Learning Ontario (EWO) Student of the Year Award recognizes six outstanding students across the province who have showcased exceptional achievements and a strong contribution to Co-operative Education, Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), or Experiential Learning. Congratulations to Ani-Keith Teeluckdharry at the University of Toronto Mississauga for receiving the University WIL Award!

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation has created a new webpage to address generative AI in the teaching and learning context at U of T. It offers support to instructors seeking information on how to include, or better engage with, generative AI in their teaching practice, including tips to get started, institutional guidance, and upcoming workshops.

LEAF+ Generative AI Project Outcomes

The Learning & Education Advancement Fund Plus (LEAF+) program for 2023 addressed the theme of generative AI in teaching and learning through a series of eleven projects implemented in the fall 2023 term. Thank you to all of the project leads for their engagement with the LEAF+ program and their contributions to the teaching and learning landscape at U of T.

Professor Susan McCahan Appointed as Provostial Advisor on Artificial Intelligence

On March 8, Professor Susan McCahan was appointed as the Provostial Advisor on Artificial Intelligence, for a term that will run until June 30, 2025. One of her first actions in the role will be to convene an AI Task Force to engage members of the University in developing a vision and strategic plan for the University's AI activities. Professor McCahan will continue to serve as the Vice Provost, Innovations in Undergraduate Education, and the Vice Provost, Academic Programs.

Equity Roundtable: A Conversation with Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Directors at U of T

Monday, March 25, from 1:00-2:30 p.m.

Hosted by the Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation, this panel of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Directors will provide an opportunity for dialogue around the unique roles these leaders serve in furthering the institution's commitment to dismantling barriers and embracing diversity in the advancement of U of T's academic mission.
