Individuals or groups may be nominated for this award. Nominees must either hold a faculty appointment with the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and have taught or held a leadership position in the MD program, or be staff members in the MD Program. Nominees should demonstrate outstanding effort in improving the equity environment in the MD Program at the University of Toronto through significant contributions to some of the following:
1. Outreach, partnership, mentorship, recruitment and/or admission activities.
2. Teaching and/or curriculum initiatives that contribute to undergraduate medical education student learning.

A previous winner may be nominated for an Aikins Award in the same category as the previous award only after a lapse of five years. Nominees will be evaluated along the following criteria for development and use of educational innovations:
Effectiveness: evidence of widespread use of the educational innovative learning object by the target group of users. Information gleaned from 3 years of course evaluations is required (data will be provided directly from the Office of Assessment and Evaluation). Adoption of the innovative educational technology by other learning institutions would be further evidence of its effectiveness.
Uniqueness and originality in the development, materials, presentation and application of the educational innovation.
Creativity and innovation in the design of the educational innovation.

| University of Toronto Global Educator Award |
Teaching-Stream and Tenure-Stream faculty members in continuing appointments as of September 1, 2021. Note this includes pre-tenure and pre-continuing status faculty. The Selection Committee will assess nominees based on the extent to which they embody the traits of a global educator, as evidenced through their modeling of intercultural excellence, including the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives. There should be clear evidence (e.g. excerpts from course syllabi, representative teaching materials – this might include sample assignment instructions, study guides, selected lecture slides, descriptions of in-class or community-based activities, screencasts from online course pages, sample course communications, etc.) of ongoing contributions and impact at the level of course design and delivery in the following areas:
1. Interactional Diversity: The instructor enhances intergroup interaction (i.e. across domestic/international students and among international students) for the purposes of developing global/intercultural fluency, a critical 21st century skill for global citizens and future professionals. The instructor empowers and equips University of Toronto students with the skills and experiences to communicate confidently across cultures in both academic, professional, and informal social settings.
2. Addressing Barriers to Inclusive Classrooms: The instructor creates the conditions for a global learning environment that engages and welcomes participation from diverse perspectives. The instructor acknowledges students’ varying cultural and linguistic contexts, through curricular and pedagogical innovations that facilitate the fuller participation of all students with the course content and with each other.
